Podcast

planning and production of the podcast program "our sleepover"
me and you planned and produced a podcast titled “our sleepover” for the digital audio content distribution service “SPINEAR” by JAVE, the internet audio business of J-WAVE (81.3FM). the theme of the program is “let’s start talking about sex, gender, and sexuality being honest with your feelings,” and each month we set a theme, such as your own or your partner’s body, sex, sexism, sexuality that differs from one person to another, gender identity, and intimiate relationship you may or may not have. we structured the program around “dialogue” and “learning,” inviting guests and experts who feel that there’s something wrong or have questions at a personal level.
questions like “who you want to live with,” “where you want to live,” and “how you want to work” are all fundamental questions in our lives, but as we enter our twenties and thirties, we are more or less forced to make choices based on our “life stages,” whether to get married or to have children (this includes the choices we don’t have because of the policies in place.) “our sleepover” hopes to focus on reaching out to those in their twenties and thirties, whose lives are undergoing major changes, and values the fact that there are an infinite number of ways to think about sex, gender, and sexuality just as there are an infinite number of ways an individual would live their lives. this program is produced on the premise of respecting each individual’s thoughts and ideas.
“me and you” was in charge of the planning and production of the program, and as we had discussions with the staff at J-WAVE, we learned that though people feel uncomfortable with how society forces a certain stereotype, such as “a person of a particular gender should live a certain way” along with their own preconceptions, many feel that they haven’t had the opportunity to express their opinions on topics around sex, gender and sexuality in their own words, nor have they had a chance to listen to their internal voice or to face society itself. the program started with this realization. we created this program based on the two pillars of creating an atmosphere that encourages people to “start talking about the issues” by listening to various voices, and “learning from experts and intellectuals” in order to gain the correct information and find the words that are just right for each person.
we went with “sleepover” –a night spent at a friend’s place– for the title of the program. the opening narration was read by musician ichiko aoba, and the main visuals were created by collage artist DAY・DREAM. we wanted to convey the atmosphere of a safe place where you can start talking about your thoughts and feelings that have been sleeping inside you to your loved ones.
because no one can experience life in any other way than their own, we often wonder about the choices others around us make and at times we aren’t quite able to accept our own way of life. that is why we try to create programs that listen to each person, paying close attention to the fact that there is no single answer to how to live our life, including how we think about gender and sexuality. while keeping in mind who our main audience is first and foremost, we would like to continue to nurture the program hoping it will reach those who have similar interests regardless of age, gender, or sexuality.
the concept of “our sleepover”
why don’t we talk about sex-related issues being honest with ourselves?
the many things we don’t know about our bodies and the bodies of others. about initimacy and sex. sexism that suppresses our feelings and makes us think that maybe we are wrong.
sexuality and gender identity vary from person to person.
the joy and pains of an intimate relationship that you may or may not engage in, and that no one really has answers to.
sometimes we don’t quite understand what’s considered “common sense”
feeling uneasy, getting hurt, or hurting someone,
though we know there is no right answer to our experiences or feelings, we cannot find the words to describe them.
somehow both what society sees as “how things ought to be” and our own preconceptions have been preventing us from being ourselves.
try to express our feelings of discomfort, doubts, and wonder that exist inside us to those we love, without having to decorate them or harden them.
gain the correct information and acquire the language and courage to express.
once we are able to face our emotions and experiences with our own words, we will find time that has stopped begin to move again and we will have more open doors to choose from.
“I’m sure it’s not even worth talking about.”
to the survivors who think that way while worrying and thinking about sex-related issues alone.
this is a sleepover where you can talk without feeling self-conscious.
like the endless talk with your friends when you stayed their house as a kid,
these talks will help support you, strengthen you in the days to come.
the exchange of personal stories is what ultimately saves us.
let’s talk, me and you.
a comment from ms. misato ishimura, J-WAVE
“when I was thinking about this project, me and you immediately came to mind. given the way they speak with their soft yet strong beliefs in carefully chosen words, I knew that with these two, we would get a chance to talk about the concept of “sex, gender, and sexuality” that is true to ourselves. I look forward to sharing the many conversations we had as a team as we planned things out, our deep honest thoughts, and how safe we felt to speak our minds, and the excitement. I just can’t wait to share this with our listeners.”
